Student disc jockeys spin marathon benefit
Seven student disc jockeys from radio station WBFH-FM in Bloomfield Hills may be walking in their sleep by Sunday.
Each of the seven will work an 11-hour shift between 6 p.m. Wednesday and midnight Saturday during a 78-hour broadcast marathon to benefit the March of Dimes.
All seven will take part during the final hour of the marathon before joining a 20-mile “Superwalk ’78” Sunday at the Pontiac Silverdome.
During the 78 hours of continuous broadcasting, the student disc jockeys will handle record requests and dedications in exchange for pledges to the March of Dimes from callers.
Pledges may be telephoned to the student-operated radio station of the Bloomfield Hills School District by calling 647-8510. They are to be in the form of a specified amount of money per mile to be walked by one of the disc jockeys.
To fulfill the pledges from callers, the seven record-spinners will walk the 20 miles of Superwalk ’78 on Sunday.
THOSE WHO will participate are Diane Kraft, Andover High School senior and March of Dimes marathon director for WBFH; Colleen Stoddard; Kyle McAdams; Dave Finney; Scott Marsh; Randy Henney, and Dave McClary, Lahser High School senior and program director for the station.
The broadcast marathon will take place in the WBFH-FM studios at Andover. The 10-watt non-commercial educational station is located at 88.1 on the FM dial and has been broadcasting since Oct. 1, 1976.
Station manager is Pete Bowers, an Andover graduate.
The students have not set a specific goal for their effort. A similar projected last year netted $2,300 in pledges, far exceeding expectations, McClary said.
Participation is not limited to students or the Bloomfield Hills school community, he emphasized.
“Anyone is eligible to pledge and we will do almost anything for a pledge,” he added.
